Tomorrow, please help promote food security among Taber seniors as part of Giving Tuesday (Nov 29th). Please visit https://www.canadahelps.org/…/894992817RR0001…/ and contribute to the Meals on Wheels (MOW) program.
Taber and District Housing Foundation (TDHF) coordinates the MOW program. Meals are prepared at Clearview Lodge and delivered to residents by TDHF staff and local volunteers. MOW clients are individuals that are over 65 years of age, or have a recognized need (i.e., a recent accident or illness, bereavement or need for respite support). Clients receive a meal consisting of soup, salad, entrée, and dessert up to 5 days per week. The goal is to provide food security for individuals that may not adequately address their nutritional needs.
Since 2020, the MOW program has seen significant growth in addressing the nutritional and social needs of Taber residents. This year, up to October 31, 2022, TDHF and volunteers delivered 4,955 meals which is nearly two and half times pre-COVID levels.
Fundraising is required to offer deeply discounted meals to low-income individuals. Starting in 2021, individuals were offered meals at $3 per day if their personal income was less than $20,000 per annum (based on Line 150 of most recent tax return). TDHF requires $12,000 to $14,000 of donations annually to offset this discount. Any amounts raised over and above the goal would allow for further expansion of the program.
